MeArtist’s Statement

The one thing that inspires me, grabs my attention, or just plain excites me is COLOR! It is my tool of choice to create emotion in my work. Fabric or yarns are usually my medium. I’m inspired by our planet (and saving Mother Earth), leaves, architecture, philosophical concepts, and the Cosmos. I often use circles in my work to illustrate the cyclic nature of things. I aspire to create a mood rather than a statement. I will occasionally employ realism to make sure my point is understood but prefer working abstractly. Usually, I just like to create a feeling that is pleasant or uplifting. For me, the finished product is a bonus. It’s the journey, the work, the color and materials that are my bliss.

Welcome to my Blog

Zebra Logo. Welcome to Scarlet Zebra’s Blog. I am Deborah Pym Harowitz and I play with yarn and fabric. Color and fiber are my artistic medium. I hope to share my successes and failures with you through these pages. One can always hope that there will be more of the former than the later ;)

Why the name Scarlet Zebra? Years ago, while looking for a business name that would relate to color (my first love) and yet not limit my scope (such as Quilts by Deb), I pulled it out of thin air. Scarlet is a bold color, full of power and passion. And let’s face it; if ever there was an animal that could use some color, it’s a Zebra! ;) I have used it for my business and my artwork, for so long, a lot of people think it’s my name!

What else might you see? My wonderful hubby is learning hot glass and you will occasionally get a glimpse of his work here too. Our talented daughter will continue to add her creative influence as she always has - even though she is working at becoming a world famous Playwright. You will most likely see her as my model. She does it so much better than I do!

I work part time in a yarn shop and teach knitting (sock) classes as well as being an occasional dyer for the shop’s line of hand dyed yarns. If you are ever in the greater Detroit area, come see us at Heritage Spinning & Weaving.

Watch for new additions; a gallery of work, designs and (occasionally) finished work for sale at my Etsy Shop. Progress may be slow, I’m not the most organized or disciplined person alive (stop chuckling, Mom!). But life is good and I will stop to smell the lavender along the way ;o)
